Maria founded Stansfield Sports Injury Clinic in 2012. Maria studied Sports Science in 2005 at Edge Hill University specialising in Biomechanics, and gained a Bachelor of Science degree with honours. Maria then went on to complete her Master of Science degree in Sports Therapy at the University of Central Lancashire, which allowed accreditation to The Society of Sports Therapists. Maria has completed specialist training in Acupuncture for Sports and Musculoskeletal conditions. In 2018, Maria gained her Chartered Scientist accreditation from The Science Council, which is a highly respected status. In 2019, Maria won the Bolton Health & Wellbeing Awards “Unsung Hero” Award after her clients voted for her. Maria has recently completed in depth training in Women’s Health to be able to offer such services to her clients, following her own Pregnancy.
Maria has a wide array of experience in elite sport including 8 years with Wigan Warriors Rugby League First Team, with 3 years as a Consultant Therapist to the First Team. Maria also worked with England Rugby League First Team for several years. During her time with Wigan Warriors she contributed towards their success of winning the Super League Grand Final twice, Challenge Cup twice and the World Club Championship.
Additionally to her experience in Rugby League, Maria has worked for most of her career with Runners of all abilities including Olympic and European, with a speciality in Marathon, Ultra Runners and Triathletes. Maria has also worked for many years with Boxers and MMA athletes of different levels from amateur to professional. Maria has also more recently worked with Manchester City Women’s Football Club.
Maria’s main area of interest is the foot and ankle; conditions including stress fractures, shin conditions, plantar fasciitis and tendinopathies. With Maria’s background in Biomechanics and additional training, she is able to custom make orthotics. Maria also has a wide array of experience in post- surgery conditions and rehabilitation including: ACL reconstruction, Shoulder labral repairs and stabilisations. Maria also treats childhood and adolescent conditions such as Juvenile Arthritis and growth plate fractures, aswell as Women’s Health pregnancy and post partum related conditions.
